On Wednesday December 4, our Seneca college student brought in her violin to play a few songs for the children. She was eager to see their reaction to the new instrument. Lately the children have been very interested in musical instruments, bells, shakers, drums etc. They often carry items around the room, singing songs as a group. Some familiar songs were played first to draw the children;s interest. They grouped together to listen at the first, before being invited to play it themselves. Taking turns, the children used the bow to make sounds on the string of the violin.
Our student introduced the parts of the violin to the children, encouraging them to say the proper name when indicating what they would like to see; bow, fingerboard, chin rest, turning pegs and neck.
“Every child has a sense of belonging when he or she is connected to others and contributes to their world” (HDLH, 2015, pg. 26).
“Children are engaged learners when they engage with others to […] collaborate, create, and express feelings, ideas, experiences and knowledge” (HDLH, 2014, pg. 37).
NEXT STEPS: continue to explore instruments; how do they sound when played? Does every instrument make a different sound? Listen to different types of music (classical, jazz, etc). Learn names of instruments.
