A Sense of Belonging

This week two children joined us in the infant room.  The first week in a new environment is always an adjustment for the children and their families as they begin to connect the similarities between home and the child care setting. The children are trying to establish what is most comfortable to them and how to connect to the educators to express their needs. Both the educators and the children are learning each others cues and will continue to build stronger connections with one another as time progresses.

The children are enhancing their sense of belonging through the following experiences:

-Recognizing, exploring, and making connections between home, early childhood setting, with their community,

and with the natural environment when they arrive each day

-Feel included and safe in relationships with adults and other children in the early year setting as connections begin to be established

-Participte fully in ways that are most comfortable to them throughout the day

-Participate in social interactions, shared exploration, play and learning with adults and children

-Make smooth transitions between home and early years setting

(HDLH 2014, PG 26, 27)

“Every child has a sense of belonging when he or she is connected to others and contributes to their world.”

What’s Next?

The next steps in our learning will be to continue to participate in ways most comfortable to the children, and build a relationship in which they are able to feel safe and included.

This will continue to enhance their  sense of “Belonging” when they feel included and safe in their relationships with those within the environment, and it will also encourage them to participate in everyday activities as their comfort levels increase (HDLH 2014, PG. 26).
