This week in the infant room the children explored mixing, scooping and dumping using coloured sand. When two colours of sand were added to the bucket, the children could see the colours mixing together. Each child explored the sand and materials, using shovels to scoop and dump. The children used their hands to pick up the sand then noticed it falling through their fingers. They repeated this motion many times.
The children demonstrated belonging by participating fully in ways that are most comfortable to them. They expressed a sense of purpose as they participated and made contributions to the program (HDLH, 2014, pg. 26).
The children demonstrate engagement by participating to the best of their abilities in an inclusive learning environment (HDLH, 2014, pg. 37).
The children also express joy and wonder in their encounters with the environment, natural world, and other people (HDLH, 2014, pg. 37).
What’s Next?
Staff can start to introduce different toys and materials that can be used with sand. For example buckets, animals, and racks. This will allow children the chance to explore and develop more fine motor skills.
