On Friday May 27, we noticed some birds walking in the farmer’s field next to the ‘little forest’. “That’s cnda geese,” one child said as they pointed to the birds.
“Honk, honk, honk,” another child said as they looked between the educators and the field where the birds were.
“What are the birds doing?” an educator asked.
“Just walking,” a child replied.
“Find food,” a child said to an educator.
“What kind of food do those birds eat?” the educator asked in reply.
“Um, apples,” a child replied. “The cnda goose and ducks eat apples.”
“How do you know that?” the educator asked.
“Like eating apples,” they said. “On the farm field.”
One of the children began to sing ‘Old MacDonald’ as they looked into the field. The other children began to sing along and replaced the words of the song with the geese and ducks they were looking at.
The birds walked out of view in the ‘little forest’, so we left the forest area and walked up the hill until we could see the birds again. The children sat down on the path behind the school field and viewed them from a different perspective.
“Honk honk honk,” a child said in response to the noise that the birds were making.
So What?
-recalled the names of the birds
-speculated what the geese ate
-viewed the birds from multiple perspectives
-associated the view of the farm field with a familiar song known to them
-discussed the birds amongst peers and other adults
Now What?
-track the days that we see birds on a calendar
-count how many we saw; record on the calendar
-research how big the geese and ducks are; measure our own bodies to compare the sizes
-listen to bird calls; can you identify which ones they are?
