In The Rain

Engaging with our environment in all types of weather is a crucial part of understanding how the world works. Children spend time outdoors in all types weather- hot, cold, rain, snow, sun, cloud, etc as each weather pattern opens up immense opportunities for learning. This spring, we have had some rainy days, but that just means that the children don their rain gear and set out to explore!

There are all sorts of things to wonder about on a rainy day. What is it? Where does it come from? Why? What does it feel like? Can I catch rain on my tongue?

“What happens if I step in this puddle?”
“How deep is the puddle?”
“What about a big splash?”

Children are investigators, scientists, mathematicians, researchers and more when they jump in puddles in the rain; calculating how deep the puddle is, determining how high they need to jump off of the ground, measuring how high the splash was, comparing it to the size of another person’s splash, taking turns with other children, and more!

“Children thrive in indoor and outdoor spaces that invite them to investigate, imagine, think, create, solve problems, and make meaning from their experiences” (How Does Learning Happen?, 2014, pg. 20).
