Investigating Through Tactile Play

Four toddlers standing around a small wooden table, exploring mini white pumpkins.

The children were given small white pumpkins to explore using their senses. The children were invited to explore the different pumpkins with a variety of materials such as crayons, markers, and paint. When given these materials to explore, the children seemed to prefer the paint to the other materials. This tactile exploration was made evident as the children not only used the paintbrush but also their hands as tools in their art creations. The children used their hands to in multiple motions/actions such as squeezing, feeling, and grasping.

‘These investigations through play fuse intellect and feeling to help children make connections and develop the capacity for higher-order thinking” (HDLH 2014, pg. 35).

“Educators can gain a deeper understanding of children’s developing skills and evolving learning approaches and can support new learning by collaborating with children in discovery and sustained, shared thinking” (HDLH 2014, pg. 35).
